How ReoLink NVR and PoE Actually Work

What the NVR does. The Network Video Recorder is a small hardened box - usually mounted in the study, comms cupboard or garage - that receives the video stream from every camera, records it to a surveillance-grade hard drive, and streams it back to the ReoLink app on your phone or a monitor on your desk. All footage stays inside your property; the internet is only used when you're viewing remotely.

Why PoE beats Wi-Fi cameras. Power over Ethernet runs a single Cat6 network cable to each camera that carries both power and data. That means no batteries, no dead spots when the Wi-Fi drops, no signal interference from other devices, and no camera reboot loops. It also lets us hide the cable inside the wall or eave with a professional finish rather than an ugly power cord dangling from every camera.

Storage sizing. A 2TB Purple hard drive gives roughly 30 days of continuous 24/7 recording on a 4-camera 4K install with motion-triggered high bitrate. Larger installs (6-8 cameras, or commercial 24/7 4K) step up to 4TB, 6TB or 10TB drives. We size the drive during the site visit and include it in the fixed quote - no surprise upgrades later.

Remote access without exposing your network. The ReoLink app uses ReoLink's P2P relay, so you can view your cameras from anywhere in the world without opening ports on your router or exposing the NVR to the open internet. Safer than the DIY port-forwarding path most YouTube tutorials will send you down.
